The vessel was bought by Gozo Channel in February 1990, the Xlendi was meant to serve as a cargo carrier between Malta and Gozo, augmenting the service provided by the MV Ghawdex (the latter is currently out of service as well). Its shape, however, earned it the title of the coffin.

The Xlendi had its fair share of mishaps, it had sustained considerable damage in 1992 when it ran aground at Comino while crossing from Cirkewwa and Mgarr, none of the 80 passengers was injured and only one of 42 cars was slightly damaged. Three years later it hit the quay at Mgarr, sustaining minor damage.

MV Xlendi was handed over to the Gozo Tourism Association to scuttle as an attraction for divers, after it had stopped operating in 1997. Xlendi finally hit the seabed resting in a position which due to prevailing winds at the time of scuttling pushed the vessel off the selected and desired position. The wreck currently lies upside down on a sandy slope 40 metres deep, and 30 metres at its shallowest, its keel.

This wreck, situated off the South of Gozo, is an ideal dive for the more experienced diver.

The dive starts very close to the southern Gozo shore. Whether the entry from boat or shore the wreck is an easy swim to reach. This upturned car ferry established as an artificial reef makes a superb view of a massive hulk that once was used by cars and people making their way to Gozo. After exploring the wreck the nearby reef wall makes a fantastic end to the dive as you slowly make your way up the wall you have the chance to see some of the Mediterranean fish life.

Because the wreck is lying upside down it is extremely dangerous to penetrate and should not be attempted.
